The newly-renovated and re-opened Hotel Victoria sounded interesting, and the price was certainly right. The location is ideal from the point of view of public transit, although I’m not sure it’s a great choice for people driving in. We reserved a twin (two bedded) room for medical reasons. Our arrival was a bit difficult: there was some kind of a party bubbling and filling the lobby. The atmosphere was fabulous, but didn’t make our arrival any easier: my husband uses a mobility scooter, and to reach the front door and lobby there was a step. I weaved and waded through the party scene to find someone who could help, but by that time, DH had already lifted/dragged his wheels in. I must say this: although we were crashing whatever party that was taking over the lobby, we were warmly welcomed by anonymous smiling strangers and we were offered most delightfully delicious morsels by friendly staff. The good folks at The Victoria know how to put on a good party, that’s for sure. Checkin wasn’t altogether smooth, unfortunately: there were no twin rooms left. The clerk immediately owned the problem and offered us two double rooms, which suited us fine, although it was a bit inconvenient to separate what each of us needed to have in our respective rooms. The rooms were not adjacent, but near by. It all worked out. And how were the rooms? Just fine! Small and sp****ly furnished (the only way to “do” small, in my opinion) but done imaginatively and in good taste. The beds were very comfortable, and the bedding was good quality. We both slept well. Everything was immaculately clean, no complaints there, and the bulk toiletries were fine. We had everything we needed. The only thing that was difficult for us was the darkness of the rooms: packing up was a challenge for these two oldies. As it turned out, I had left my iPad (in a grey case) on one of night tables. Fortunately, I discovered my error before it was too late. But the darkness of the room was a problem for us. The designers cleverly managed to retain and capitalize on the interesting history of the hotel, on a budget, which added to our enjoyment. I’ll take tasteful, sustainable, sensitive and clever over splashy, glitzy and expensive any day! We left the next morning for a medical appointment, so our time at The Victoria was short. But we left with a good impression and a great feeling. The best thing? The staff: they were friendly, fun, very helpful and accommodating. Yes, they made a serious booking error, but they more than made up for it with their kindness, friendliness and willingness to help. We left with a generally positive impression, and we’ll give the Victoria another chance, for sure.
